Baltimore County’s 1979 Master Plan identified a location for a new self-sustaining planned community to provide housing, employment, and a range of commercial services for future residents. The Owings Mills plan set aside multiple land use areas one of which includes the Owings Mills New Town area.
Owings Mills is quickly becoming a popular location for those looking to buy in today’s market. Its location in the Baltimore Metropolitan area makes it prime for those who commute into Baltimore City for work, with I-795 and the Maryland Transportation Authority Subway system providing convenient access.
Most residents don’t know it but one of Owings Mill’s main thoroughfares Lakeside Boulevard, was originally designed to become a lake in a bid for a setup similar to that of Columbia Md. An Army Corps of Engineers study later showed that the lake imposed a negative environmental impact so the plans were scrapped but Lakeside Boulevard remained.
Through the 18th & 19th centuries mining was a large industry in Northern Baltimore County and the current Owings Mills area, leaving a lasting memory in but is little known today. Ore, flint (Flint Hill Drive), gold (Gold Hill Rd), mica & isinglass (Isinglass Rd) were extracted in and around Soldiers Delight Park. Wagons were used to transport minerals from the park during that period. The folks who built and maintained those wagons were called Wainwrights leaving us with today’s Wainwright Circle.
